أَشْهَدُ أنْ لا إلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَأشْهَدُ أنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
“Halal” is an Arabic term meaning “permissible” in Islamic law, particularly regarding food and practices. It encompasses foods that are allowed for Muslims to consume, adhering to guidelines set in the Quran and Hadith.
This includes humane and ritualistic animal slaughter, the prohibition of pork and alcohol consumption, and the avoidance of carnivorous and predatory animals. Halal practices extend to various aspects of life, emphasizing cleanliness, ethics, and dedication to Allah’s principles.
The opposite of halal is “haram,” referring to what is forbidden or unlawful in Islam.
Eating halal holds significance for Muslims as it aligns with their religious beliefs and practices. It involves consuming food and engaging in practices that are permissible according to Islamic teachings, as outlined in the Quran and Hadith. By following halal dietary guidelines, Muslims seek to maintain a connection with their faith, fulfill religious obligations, and uphold ethical principles such as humane treatment of animals and cleanliness. It also serves as a way to spiritually purify oneself and foster a sense of community among fellow believers.
“O people, eat the Halal, tayyib out of what lies in the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Shaytān; indeed, he is an open enemy for you.” (al-Baqarah: 168)Abstaining from haram foods and practices is crucial for Muslims as it respects Islamic teachings outlined in the Quran and Hadith. This choice stems from a commitment to spiritual purity, obedience to Allah’s commands, and ethical integrity, forming an essential aspect of their faith and moral values.>
“Prohibited for you are: Maytah (carrion), blood, the flesh of swine, and those upon which (a name) other than that of Allāh has been invoked (at the time of slaughter), animal killed by strangulation, or killed by a blow, or by a fall, or by goring, or that which is eaten by a beast unless you have properly slaughtered it;” (Surah-al-Maa’idah:3)
“Eat not (of meats) on which Allāh’s name has not been pronounced, and surely it is a sin…” (Surah- al-An’aam:121)
“…and there are cattle over which they do not pronounce the name of Allāh, – all being fabrications against Him.” (Surah-al-An’aam:138)
“What should cause you to avoid eating of that upon which the name of Allāh has been invoked while He has spelled out to you all that He has made unlawful for you, except that to which you are compelled by extreme necessity? Surely, there are many who misguide people on the basis of their desires without having knowledge. Surely, your Lord is the best knower of those who cross the limits.” (Surah-al-An’aam:119)
“They are the ones whose hearts Allah did not intend to purify. For them there is humiliation in this world, and for them there is a great punishment in the Hereafter. They are listeners to the fallacy, devourers of the unlawful.” (Surah-al-Maa’idah: 41-42)
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه و سلم “إنَّ اللَّهَ طَيِّبٌ لَا يَقْبَلُ إلَّا طَيِّبًا، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِمَا أَمَرَ بِهِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ فَقَالَ تَعَالَى: “يَا أَيُّهَا الرُّسُلُ كُلُوا مِنْ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا”، وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: “يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ” ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الرَّجُلَ يُطِيلُ السَّفَرَ أَشْعَثَ أَغْبَرَ يَمُدُّ يَدَيْهِ إلَى السَّمَاءِ: يَا رَبِّ! يَا رَبِّ! وَمَطْعَمُهُ حَرَامٌ، وَمَشْرَبُهُ حَرَامٌ، وَمَلْبَسُهُ حَرَامٌ، وَغُذِّيَ بِالْحَرَامِ، فَأَنَّى يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُ
Abu-Hurairah (R.A.) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Verily Allah the Exalted is pure. He does not accept but that which is pure. Allah commands the believers with what He commanded the Messengers. Allah the Almighty has said: “O you Messengers! Eat of the good things and act righteously” [Al-Quran: 23:51-53]. And Allah the Almighty also said: “O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided you with” [Al-Quran: 2:167-172]. Then he (the Prophet) mentioned (the case of) the man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who stretches out his hands to the sky (saying): “O Lord! O Lord!” (while) his food was unlawful, his drink was unlawful, his clothing was unlawful, and he is nourished with unlawful things, so how can he be answered”
والَّي نفس محمد بيده إن العبد لَقذف اللقمة الِرام فِ جوفه اُّ يتقبل نُّه عمل أربع يو اُّ رواه الطبرانّ ٦٤٩٥
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I swear by Him in whose hands the soul of Muhammad lies, verily a servant (of Allāh) puts a morsel Haram food in his mouth (due to which) no good deed is accepted from him for 40 days” (Tabrani , 6495)
لَ يدخل الجنة جسد غذي بالِرام رواه الطبرانّ ٥٩٦١
The body which has been nourished with Harām WILL NOT ENTER JANNAH. (Tabarani, 5961)
عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ رضي اللّ عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الَّلِّ صَلََّّ الَّلُّ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لََ يَرْبُو لَِْ م نَبَتَ نُِّْ سُحْتٍ وْلََ بِه َإِلََّ كََنَتْ النَّ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A body nourished from Haram or Riba’ is worthy of nothing but the Fire of Jahannam” (Sunan Tirmizhi, 614)
عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول اللّ صلَّ اللّ عليه وسلم: لۡن يأخذ ترابا فيجعله فِ فيه خير له نُّ أن يَعل فِ فيه اُّ حرم اللّ عليه رواه احمد ٧٤٩٠
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “To take dirt and put it in the mouth is better than putting anything which Allah made Haram in the mouth” (Musnad Ahmad, 7490)
من صلى صلاتنا واستقبل قبلتنا وأكل ذبيحتنا فذلك المسلم الذي له ذمة الله وذمة رسوله رواه البخاري ٣٩١
“The one who prays our salat, faces our Qiblah, and eats our zabiha: he is the Muslim who is under the protection of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ” (Sahih Bukhari, 391)
وقال سهل رضي الله عنه من أكل الحرام عصت جوارحه شاء أم أبى علم أو لم يعلم ومن كانت طعمته حلالاً أطاعته جوارحه ووُفِّقت للخيرات إحياء علوم الدين ج ٢ ص ٩١ ط دار المعرفة
Sahl said: Whoever eats Haram, his body parts disobey Allah, whether he likes it or not, whether knows it or not. Similarly, one whose food is Halal, his body parts obey Allah and he is given the ability to perform good.
وقال بعض السلف إن أول لقمة يأكلها العبد من حلال يغفر له ما سلف من ذنوبه ومن أقام نفسه مقام ذل في طلب الحلال تساقطت عنه ذنوبه كتساقط ورق الشجر
Some of the Salaf have mentioned: With the first morsel one eats of Halal, his previous (minor) sins are forgiven. Whoever lowers himself to search for Halal, his (minor) sins fall off like the leaves of a tree.
Zabiha are the rules of slaughtering an animal to make it Halal for consumption.
